have wanted to try it.

Butcher paper, lace and a little
sprig of fresh lavender worked perfectly.

I love to see fresh bread setting out in
the kitchen and this makes a very
nice display.

a great combination.
Elegance mixed with natural rawness.

Here I took some fresh water pearls and
strung them on some tiny silver wire and
then twisted the wire around the
ends of the twine.

Embellished Sconce

Hello Everyone!

Today I'm sharing some photos of an embellished
sconce hanging above a headboard.

Sitting atop the headboard is an architectural piece

I have had for many years.

I felt the sconce needed a little "something" so I added

a vintage postcard dated 1859, some vintage lace and

several chains of differing elements.

Textures and Layers

When I decorate I like to mix

as many textures as possible. I love

the contrast and how they compliment and

play off of one another.

I also LOVE to layer.

Recently I painted my coffee table black

and distressed it a lot!

I've had the silver tray and mirror

atop the table for quite some time

and still love it with candles.

To add more texture and layers I took

a vintage ornate frame and set the

tray and mirror inside it.

Quite a mix but

they work very well together.

Christmas Treasure by Charles Dickens

Every Christmas I spend several hours

reading one of the sweetest little

Christmas treasures. It is one of my personal holiday

traditions. I think the history behind

the book makes it very special!

The Life of Our Lord was written

by Charles Dickens for his young children

between 1846 and 1849.

Charles Dickens

Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord

exclusively for his children, to whom he

read it aloud every Christmas. He

strictly forbade publication during his

lifetime and begged his sister-in-law,

Georgina Hogarth, to make sure that the

Dickens family "...would never even hand the

manuscript, or a copy of it, to anyone to

take out of the house." His handwritten

manuscript was passed down after Dickens's

death in 1870 to Georgina Hogarth. On her

death in 1917 it came into the possession

of Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, Dickens's last

surviving son. The Dickens family continued

to read it at every Christmas, and at the

author's request, delayed publication until

the last of his children had died.

On the death of Sir Henry Fielding Dickens in

1933, his will provided that, if the

majority of his family were in favour of

publication, The Life of Our Lord should

be given to the world.

By majority vote, Sir Henry's widow and

children decided to publish the book in London.

The book begins:

"My Dear Children, I am very anxious that you

should know something about the History of

Jesus Christ. For everybody ought to know

about Him. No one ever lived who was so good,

so kind, so gentle, and so sorry

for all people who did wrong, or were

in anyway ill or miserable, as He was.

There then follows a simple account of

Jesus's life and teachings, with an

occassional touch of Dickens humor.

Pine in the Kitchen

Last night we bought the Christmas tree and

the house smells beautiful!

Here is a little shot of my kitchen

window taken late last night using

the bottom branches we cut from the tree.

FYI: For those that have asked, the piece
behind the 19th. Street sign is a
vintage ceiling tin. I have four of
them throughout my home and love them!

Silver Bells Grey

Every year at Christmas I place on the

piano my vintage sheet music of Silver Bells.

It is one of my favorite Christmas carols

and I love this old well used copy I

picked up at an antique store.

This past summer I was searching for

a grey color to paint some pieces

of furniture. As I was going through

a cabinet I came across my Silver Bells

sheet music and knew that was the color!

Home Depot matched it perfectly!

It is now my favorite grey color and

I call it

Silver Bells Grey

The little piece in the first photograph

was painted Silver Bells Grey, distressed and the

tiny drawer knob was replaced with a

large brass drawer pull.

It is large and heavy and just wonderful!

The star is my favorite Christmas shape.

It will hang on the wall in the kitchen

Lavender Garland

Lavender Garland.

I followed her instructions and it turned

out just great and smells fabulous.

Be sure to follow the

important tip!

You can find the tutorial here.

Because mine is hanging vertical from the

ceiling to the floor instead of a

horizontal garland I added a

square knot below where each ball hangs

so that they wouldn't bunch up

at the bottom.

On my desk is a vintage chippy pink metal basket that

sits atop a silver tray and holds

The little plate is a recent thrift

store find. Everything on the plate is

hand painted and it was made in France.

Best Holiday Potpourri

A delightful way to scent your home

for the holidays is with a

natural ingredients potpourri.

The fragrance from this recipe is

so spicey wonderful and it's also

quick and simple to put together.

I've tested a number of stove top

potpourri recipes but this is

my all time favorite!

1 orange quartered

1/2 cup fresh cranberries

3-4 cinnamon sticks broken in pieces

1 tablespoon whole cloves

1 star anise

1 1/2 teaspoon whole allspice

Put all ingredients in a saucepan and fill

the pan with water. I use a 1 1/2 quart

saucepan.

Set burner at lowest setting.

Refill water when necessary.

This also makes a very nice hostess

gift, or gift for a friend, hair stylist,

teacher or anyone!

I place all the ingredients in a

clear cellophane bag (leave the orange whole)

and tie with twine or ribbon.

Attach a card with the instructions.

Industrial Chic

I've begun to really like adding a few

industrial pieces to my home decor.

This piece I picked up at Sweet Salvage
in Phoenix last week.

It is called a Third Hand and

has two arms that rotate

and are adjustable and each arm has an

alligator clip jaw to hold whatever

you like.

I've placed two vintage Paris postcards

in it for now, but it

looks great with family photos,

vintage flashcards and makes a darling
recipe holder for the kitchen.
So fun!!

Sweet Salvage was mentioned in one of
my earlier posts.
Brooke Giannetti from Velvet and Linen
was there for her book signing and took
photos before the store opened. You can

Zinnia Designs is a small oval

ceramic dish made from creamy white clay.

The workmanship is outstanding!

I just love mine!

A 2012 Petit Paris calendar from

Little Brown Pen.

Again the workmanship is outstanding

and the paper is of high quality.

Both would make great stocking stuffers!

Desert Pomegranates

Here in the Sonoran Desert there are

a few signs of fall.

I cut a little branch from a young

dwarf pomegranate tree in our back yard.

The color of the pomegranate is beautiful for fall

centerpieces and I like to place them

in bowls with lemons and

unshelled walnuts.

Next time you are at the grocery store

would work as a vase!

Hasty Industrial Purchase

Last week I went into a thrift store

and saw this steel floor lamp.

It stood very straight, had unusual knobs,

was heavy and sturdy and I loved

the industrial style and price!

Being in somewhat of a hurry I paid for

it and rushed out the door.

I got home and began really

looking it over and it doesn't have

an on/off switch! Plugging it in is what turns

it on. As much as I love the lamp it

would not be particularly convenient

to have to plug and unplug in the

spot I had planned to put it.

The problem is fixed with a

switch extension cord that lies

on the floor beside the lamp base

but still a bit inconvenient.

I do love the lamp and it is perfect

beside my reading chair.

Rustic or Romantic or Elegant

pillow sham. The top is formed

with 252 linen yo-yos.

I'm displaying it folded in a rusty basket

because I love the texture it adds

with the other items.

What's in Your Husband's Shop?

My husband's shop is a place I don't go

very often. He has a hobby that fills

the shop with sawdust, so, if I need the rake

or the hoe or plant fertilizer I go in, get

what I need and scamper out quickly.

A few days ago I went in for some

plant fertilizer and decided to

just kinda look around.

There on a back counter was a little rusted

tin cup. (above photo)

I was a bit surprised because

a few days earlier I had

seen the inspiration photo below and decided

I would do this whenever I found

a tin cup or canister.

Now I had a rusty tin cup! Just what
I was looking for!
It was full of sawdust so I knew it
hadn't been used in a long time.

I stenciled a lace design on the
cup with craft paint.
It sits in my kitchen on the counter
in plain sight, but, he hasn't
said a thing!
I'm not going to either!!

that caught my eye that I have plans for.

Jeanne d' Arc Cones

Last month I was at an antique store

in Phoenix and found a little glove box

I was interested in. When I opened the

box inside were two rabbit pelt cuffs.

My first thought was that someone had

mistakenly put them inside the box because

it was only a couple dollars, but the

price tag stated the rabbit was included.

I was delighted and knew I could use them to

make cones as I had seen often in

Jeanne d' Arc Living magazines.

The cones are made of three layers of

card stock formed around a styrofoam

cone. The insides are lined with vintage

book pages attached with craft glue.

The outside is covered with vintage book pages

antiqued with Walnut Ink.

The rabbit pelt fit perfect around the

top and is attached with craft glue.

Simple twine is used for the hanger.

Each is embellished with vintage rhinestone pieces.

For the holidays they will hang

from door knobs filled with

pine and white carnations.

These were really an enjoyable project!

Pretty Measuring Spoons

If you like your kitchen utensils to be

functional and pretty here are the

perfect measuring spoons.

They are heavy and soooo pretty!!

I found them at Anthropologie.

And who can resist the little latte bowls.
I love the trademark on the bottom.
You can never have too many of these.

The spoons come held together with a heavy metal pin.
I'm looking for a little spot in my kitchen
to hang them.

White Shabby and Beaded

In my home are a number of fabricless

lampshades because I love the look!

On this shade I left some of the faded and dried fabric but cut it and tied

little bows around the metal frame.

On the bulb is an antique beaded bulb

cover which diffuses the light some and

adds to the shabby vintage look.

Little Dior Box

Last week I picked up this small (6 in. diameter)

Christian Dior box at an antique store in Phoenix.

It's a light gray color and in very good condition.
It could be used in a number of different ways.

Presently I'm using it on my desk to hold extra office supplies. It would also make

a cute wrapped candy container for the desk.

Either way, it was one of those little things

I just couldn't pass up when I saw it.

Single Gardenia

This morning I was walking around the
back yard looking at the plants, most of which have had a hard time staying pretty through
the heat of the summer.
As I walked past the gardenia bush I saw
something white and there was a single beautiful fragrant gardenia peeking out! I was quite surprised as they don't begin to bloom until it gets much cooler.
So, for whatever reason this single little beauty decided to bloom, I'm glad it did!

White Treasures

Many of you collect bottles and jars just as I do. They are useful and decorative!

The large glass jar on the right is from my grandmother. As a young girl visiting her farm I remember seeing it in her pantry filled with powdered sugar. Just recently I obtained it and have it on my counter filled with coconut. Each time I look at it I remember my wonderful grandmother!

The smaller bottle in the front is actually one of a pair of salt and pepper shakers. One of the elements I love to decorate with is French Dragees. These are the white ones that are pearly and pretty enough that I have some in this jar on my counter.

The white bowl is one of two I recently found at a thrift store. They were made in England and a perfect serving size.

Chain, Suede and Rhinestones Bracelet

This week I made a new bracelet from a

tutorial I found on Pinterest.

This bracelet looks especially nice worn layered with other bracelets and watches.

Kitchen Gadget Art

Here's a fun little project I did using a

vintage kitchen grater. I like graters

because they have an instant hanger.

A vintage postcard was attached first. It is

embellished with rhinestones above and below and a vintage brass filigree corner.

The blueish gray color in the filigree

agreed so perfectly with the blueish gray in the postcard.

I'm working on another grater project using

a recipe from my grandmother.

They work well for kitchen art!

Yesterday was a good day!

I found several fun things I can use.

An old trophy dated 1917.

It's somewhat primitive but perfect for a succulent on the back porch.

A small red alligator train case. This is so darling and zips on two sides and

the inside lid is a mirror.

A set of heavy cut crystal glasses.

They are my new everyday glasses.

Beautiful lace and trims from an elderly woman who used to make doll clothes. There was well over 150 little packages.

Immediately I thought of a strand of pearls

Homemade Favorites

In my kitchen are a number of colorful hot pad holders

but I always seem to reach for the two or three

homemade ones that are favorites.

The top one I made many years ago, my sister made

the cutest one with the crocheted flower and the

pretty pink one is from an estate sale.

I just used them to remove the bread from the oven!

Intricate Details

Homer Laughlin serving pieces have

always been favorites of mine. I adore the

elegant intricate details.

Yesterday I scored this large serving platter

at a thrift store for a steal!

It's to pretty to store away so for display two silver

serving pieces sit atop it and I love how

the designs complement each other.

barbecues? While I love it with lots of butter

and salt, it's fun to try some of the many

flavored butter recipes available.

Fancy Tags

Recently I acquired numerous pieces of

heavy compressed cardboard.

I knew it would be perfect for tags and at the

same time I would be doing a little recycling.

(collage of tags prior to drilling holes in them)

It has to be cut with an exacto knife

because it is dense and about 1/8 inch thick.
After distressing, the images were attached to the cut tags with craft adhesive.

The small one to the left is a snippet
from a vintage French postcard and
it's now on my key chain.
(the cardboard doesn't bend)
For the bottom tag I used a label
that was removed from a Bonne Maman
preserves jar.

Jeanne d'Arc Living.

I love this old white door. It leans

against a wall in my living room.

I have big plans for it!

Two Bottles

Yesterday at the antique store I found these

two thick and heavy vintage bottles to

add to my collection.

The rims aren't the screw on type

and one looks as if it could be an old

Heinz ketchup bottle.

A large chandelier crystal is hung around

one using rusty wire.

Most of my bottles are in front of windows

where the sun shines beautifully

through them.

Thinking Ahead in Red

Thinking ahead about decorations for July 4th.

Love these flower bouquets with the polka dot ribbon.

Metal cans would work very well and look just

as cute as the galvanized buckets.

I'll be making several of these since I

already have the polka dot ribbon.

The mix of stripes and lace is simple

and stylish and perfect for outside tablecloths.

Now, if only I could find an old red truck!

Vintage Book Decor

This morning I was snapping away and took these
photographs of a favorite book bundle.

The cover remains on one book because I loved

its faded and muted colors.

Each book is different. You never quite know

beforehand what you will find.

Leaving strings, paper snippets and even

some dried glue gives a nice look.

They make a fabulous decorating element.

Chic Boutique Hangers

You've probably seen these fabric

covered hangers in fashion boutiques

for several years.

I love them and found they are very

easy to make.

Two metal hangers are covered with thin strips of

torn fabric. I used muslin for two

and canvas for the third.

I am most fond of the canvas.

The edges were left frayed and ties remain

where the fabric was pieced together.

They look great without embellishment,

but I added a vintage metal buckle

to one and some rhinestone bling to

another, just enough to not interfere

with whatever

clothing is hung on them.

They're just fun!

it makes a delicious dessert!

My most recent antique store treasure is a beautiful black dress form.
I was really lucky to find this beauty!

I have adorned her with medals and metal objects many of which

have special meaning to me.

vintage military ribbons and stars

vintage brass escutcheon

vintage military medal for good conduct

vintage door plate

another of my favorite numeral tags from Paris

my grandmother's thimble

(I was able to attach the thimble with a large earring wire because my

grandmother had used it to the point that there was a tiny hole in the top)

my father's brass pocket knife

French coin I brought back from France

The door plate is held to the form with taupe tape which was the

handle of a boutique bag from Paris

And lastly, she proudly stands on a silver tray.

White Scale Display

Several years ago I found a heavy old white

scale at an antique store.

It was underneath a rack of clothing way back

against the wall almost hidden.

Fortunately, the original white chippy paint needed

nothing but a good cleaning.

Today it sits atop a beautiful vintage

silver platter on a dresser with perfume, jewelry

and sentimental mementos.

When I shop I always try to think of ways to

use an item other than its

original purpose.
